The release of the FXST Harley Davidson Softail in 1984 lead to the coining of the term "softail" to define motorcycles that feature a moveable rear suspension system with shock absorbers. To present the appearance of a firm frame or a hardtail, the shock absorbers or springs are hidden under the transmission, along the axis of the motorcycle.

These are also the only range of Harley-Davidson motorcycles that offer a choice of front suspensions. Because Softail models do not have rubber-mounted engines, they work on a counterbalanced version of the 1584cc Twin Cam 96B Engine to compensate for the vibration.

There are eight models in the Softail Family: FXSTB: Night Train The sleek Night Train has a narrow front wheel, drag-style bar on risers, and forward controls. It has a black powder-coated engine and six-speed transmission. Under the bobtail fender is a 200mm rear tire, and a bullet headlamp at the front.

FXSTC: Softail Custom With a strong chrome appearance, laced 21½ front wheel, and Fat Bob tank, the Harley Davidson Softail Custom boasts both style and class. It is equipped with ape-hanger handlebars, twin hidden shocks, and counterbalanced black and chrome V-Twin.

FLSTF: Fat Boy The sturdy Fat Boy has a broad 17½ front wheel, with custom-skirted back fender above a 200mm rear tire. It has cast aluminum wheels ringed with .50-caliber holes, a shotgun exhaust, and a V-Twin engine in chrome and black. It also comes in different colors such as Vivid Black, Pewter Pearl, Pacific Blue Pearl, Black Pearl, Dark Blue Denim, Candy Red Sunglo, Copper Pearl.

FLSTN: Softail Deluxe The Softail Deluxe embodies nostalgia and class with its wide whitewall tires, full-skirted fenders, a chrome grab rail, and a retro speedometer. It also runs with a six-speed transmission and 96-cubic-inch fuel-injected, chrome and black V-Twin.

FLSTC: Heritage Softail Classic The Heritage Softail Classic is a blend of paint, tooled leather, and chrome. It has a counterbalanced, rigid-mounted, smooth Big Twin and hidden suspension. It also comes in Vivid Black, White Gold Pearl, Dark Blue Pearl, Crimson Red Sunglo, Pewter Pearl, and Purple Haze, among many more.

FLSTSB: Softail Cross Bones The Softail Cross Bones gets down to business with its chopped front fender and retro air cleaner cover. It has smooth lowered suspension and rigid-mounted, air-cooled 1584cc Twin Cam 96B balanced engine.

FXCW: Rocker The minimalist Rocker gives the appearance of zero suspension around its 240mm tire through a clean rear fender mounted on the swingarm. To balance simplicity and uniqueness, ignition coil is shaped like a hand grenade, and the internally wired handlebar is impressive.

FXCWC: Rocker C The Rocker C motorcycle has a 240mm rear tire, silver powder-coated engine and polished covers, with a solo seat, and top-mounted speedometer. It is easy to maneuver, with an open palette for customization. It also comes in vivid black and pewter pearl.
