The Sturgis event started in 1938, and it was a really tiny affair for the first few years. It was called off during 1942 due to gas rationing for the war effort, but resumed once things got back to normal. Growth was slow but steady during the first few decades of the event. Every year bikers would come to Sturgis, have a great time, and go back and tell all their friends about the wonderful experience they were missing out on. Gradually, by word of mouth, the crowds began to get bigger and bigger every year. In addition, the event itself got bigger every year, too. At first centered around a short race, it's now grown to become a week long event.
One of the oddest things about the rally is that the Harley Davidson and Sturgis connection wasn't there back in the beginning. The original race was organized by the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club, and the founder of the club was Clarence "Pappy" Hoel. And who was Hoel? The owner of the local Indian Motorcycle shop, which was Harley Davidson's biggest rival at the time. But these day, when it comes to motorcycles in Sturgis, Harley Davidson rules the road.
